Programs & Opportunities

Alaska Housing’s Public Housing department is here to support Alaskans in accessing safe, quality, affordable housing. We assist low-income Alaskans across the state in finding a home, while providing access to resources that can help improve their employment opportunities and self-sufficiency.

About Alaska Housing Rental Assistance

A Moving to Work Agency

Alaska Housing is one of the few housing authorities in the nation participating in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Moving to Work demonstration program. This allows AHFC to develop alternatives to traditional federal assistance. As a Moving to Work agency, AHFC has developed a rent-reform model which classifies families as Classic or Step participants and offers a family self-sufficiency program called Jumpstart.

Through Jumpstart, families work toward fulfilling their personal and financial goals by accessing resources, case management, and tools to increase job skills, improve earning potential and help them become more financially independent.

AHFC-Owned Housing

Alaska Housing operates more than 1,600 units in a variety of sizes and housing types, which often feature on-site management and maintenance staff.

Who is eligible?

Households with income that is at or below 80 percent of the area median income are eligible to apply for placement on the waiting list. As units become available, those on the list are invited to an appointment to learn more about the program and will be screened to ensure they meet the income and program requirements. Successful applicants will be offered an available unit.

How Can I Apply?

Applications for Alaska Housing-owned rental units may be accepted in different communities throughout the year. Before completing an application, see what’s available by checking these open waiting lists. An application must be submitted for each community and may be hand-delivered or mailed to the program location.

Meet Our Staff

"To me, you put your best effort into things. What that means to me is that if I am called to fix something, that means I fix it. And I try to do that in a very swift and timely manner, leaving it better than when I found it.” – John, AHFC Maintenance Mechanic

Privately-Owned Rental Housing: Vouchers

Housing vouchers help eligible Alaskans lease units in the private rental market. AHFC administers various types of voucher programs in 12 communities throughout Alaska. This includes Housing Choice Vouchers, Special Purpose Vouchers, Project-Based Vouchers and Sponsor-Based Rental Assistance.

Housing Choice Vouchers

Housing Choice Vouchers help eligible Alaskans lease units in the private rental market. As a family moves, the rental assistance moves with them. There is a waiting list process for Housing Choice Vouchers and families are classified as Classic or Step program participants upon admission. Learn about eligibility and how to apply.

To be successful, the Housing Choice Voucher program relies on relationships between:

  • The tenant and the landlord
  • The tenant and AHFC
  • The landlord and AHFC

Learn more about what each party is responsible for and what is expected of each.

Special Purpose Vouchers

Special Purpose Vouchers are collaborations between AHFC and partner agencies that serve Alaskans with distinct housing needs. These programs are not available directly through AHFC, so families must receive a referral from a partner agency and apply directly with that organization.

Project-Based Vouchers

Project-Based Vouchers are awarded to private developments under contract with Alaska Housing. These vouchers are tied to a specific unit to help pay for rent and the family is unable to move the assistance to another location.

Sponsor-Based Rental Assistance

Sponsor-Based Rental Assistance provides funding to private developments under contract with Alaska Housing. This assistance seeks to help vulnerable Alaskans facing challenges in finding housing. Sponsor-Based Rental Assistance is tied to a specific unit and the family is unable to move the assistance to another location.
