Putting His Best Efforts In For Residents

When John Osenga heard there was a job opening as a maintenance mechanic at Alaska Housing Finance Corporation in Seward, he knew it was an opportunity worth pursuing.

John was familiar with Glacier View, AHFC’s housing location for seniors and individuals with disabilities in the community. He grew up in Seward, currently serves as Vice Mayor on the City Council and had done some snow removal at the facility previously. John also knew an individual who had worked in maintenance there for many years, a fact that made an impression on him.

Longevity Was Important

“He had been here for a very long time, which to me meant that he felt it was a very good company to work for,” said John, who has been with Alaska Housing since April 2022. “Longevity was important to him and to me.”

John also understands the importance of his role for Glacier View residents. Whether it’s performing regular maintenance, making repairs or making sure the facility and the grounds are well kept, the residents depend on him.

“To me, you put your best effort into things. What that means to me is that if I am called to fix something, that means I fix it,” he said. “And I try to do that in a very swift and timely manner, leaving it better than when I found it.”

Grateful Residents

Those efforts have not been lost on Glacier View residents.

“John is great, if you have a problem with something he takes care of it quickly,” said Walter, who has lived there since 2017. “I had a problem with the faucet in my shower. He came up and tore the whole thing apart and had it fixed in a couple hours.”

‘A Good Place to Be’

That kind of service makes Glacier View a place people want to live. The facility includes seniors who have been there for more than 10 years and there is a waiting list of people looking to move in.

“It is a good place to be,” John said. “I think they feel safe and everything’s pretty much addressed in a timely manner and that makes them feel good.”
