How to Apply for Rental Assistance

We’re here to help.

Looking for rental assistance? Alaska Housing has affordable housing opportunities for eligible Alaskans. An Alaska Housing representative can assist you if you have questions concerning your application.

How Do I Apply?

  • To receive rental assistance with Alaska Housing, you must complete an application and get on a waiting list.
  • Each Alaska Housing office has specific items that are part of their application package. Review each community's waiting list status and required application package.
  • Complete the application package for the community you are interested in and submit it by mail or to the local office.
  • Alaska Housing uses the term family throughout the application; a family can be one or more persons.
  • As units or vouchers become available, those on the list are invited to an appointment to learn more about the program and will be screened to ensure they meet the income and program requirements.
  • Successful applicants will be offered an available unit or voucher.

I'm interested in applying for AHFC-Owned rental units.

Alaska Housing operates more than 1,600 units in a variety of sizes and housing types, which often feature on-site management and maintenance staff.

  • AHFC-Owned housing is available in 13 communities and includes Family and Senior/Disabled Housing.
    • Family Housing offers one-to-five bedroom units for families and individuals.
    • Senior/Disabled housing contains one-bedroom units with elevator access for residents who are at least 62 years of age or persons with a disability.
  • Households with income that is at or below 80 percent of the area median income are eligible to apply for placement on the Family Housing and Senior/Disabled Housing waiting list.
  • Security deposits or other rental expenses are a family’s responsibility.

I’m interested in applying for AHFC’s Housing Choice Vouchers.

The Housing Choice Voucher program helps eligible Alaskans lease privately owned rental units from participating landlords.

  • Eligibility to receive a Housing Choice Voucher is based on income. Families whose income is at or below 50 percent of the area median income are encouraged to apply. The maximum income level varies depending on your location and the size of your household. There is no minimum income requirement.
  • Families that are not currently living in one of the 12 voucher communities, but plan to move into the area, may also be eligible to apply through the Portability Process

I’d like to apply for housing vouchers available through AHFC partner agencies.

Special Purpose Vouchers are collaborations between AHFC and partner agencies that serve Alaskans with distinct housing needs. These programs are not available directly through AHFC, so families must receive a referral from a partner agency and apply directly with that organization. Learn more about Special Purpose Vouchers and how to apply.

What is a reasonable accommodation?

  • A reasonable accommodation is a change, exception, or adjustment to a rule, policy, practice, or service that may be necessary for a person with a disability to have an equal opportunity to use and enjoy a dwelling, including public and common-use spaces. Alaska Housing must provide a requested accommodation unless doing so would result in a fundamental alteration in the nature of its program or an undue financial and administrative burden.
  • If you or a family member is a person with a disability, you have the right to ask for a Reasonable Accommodation.
  • If you would like more information on the Public Housing Division’s Reasonable Accommodation process, please visit our Fair Housing page.
  • If you need assistance with the application process, please contact your local Alaska Housing office.
