Q: How do I calculate my shelter burden?
A: Add rent plus utilities, then divide it by your gross monthly income.
Q: What happens if I want to add an adult to my household who is younger than 62 years old or is not a person with a disability?
A: Families that add an adult who is neither a dependent nor someone with a disability will cause the household to move into the Step Program and the household will be subject to Step Program rules.
Q: Will I receive a utility allowance?
A: Yes. Under the Classic Program, participants will continue to receive utility allowances. Utility reimbursement payments will no longer be provided.
Q: Will I receive a medical allowance?
A: Medical allowances will no longer be part of the program.
Q: I'm interested in relocating to a different community in Alaska. Can I apply for a waiting list in a new area of the state?
A: Yes. Vouchers will still be transferable within communities where voucher programs exist. For Public Housing, transfers between communities are not allowed.
Q: Can I move with my voucher outside of Alaska?
A: Yes. You can move your Housing Choice Voucher out of state.
Q: Will I still have to meet with Alaska Housing to conduct annual reviews?
A: Classic program participants will meet with Alaska Housing once every three years.
Q: What happens if I experience a change in my household composition?
A: You will still need to report changes in household composition in writing within 10 business days of the change.
Q: Does the Housing Choice Voucher 50 percent rule apply (whereby the participant must rent a unit that costs no more than 50 percent of their income)?
A: Yes. Anyone on an income-based rent will be subject to the 50 percent rule at time of leasing.
Q: Will Public Housing residents still need to complete community service requirements?
A: Yes. Public Housing residents must still complete the community service requirement.
Q: Does Alaska Housing provide additional resources for Classic participants?
A: Alaska Housing is launching an expanded Family Self-Sufficiency program that will offer goal setting, training, and job search assistance. All participants are eligible for this free program. Some examples of classes include job searches, resume writing, financial management and more.
