Open Application Period for Anchorage Housing Choice Voucher Program

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – April 4, 2023 – For the month of April, Alaska Housing Finance Corporation will open a 30-day window to apply to be on the Housing Choice Voucher waitlist for the Municipality of Anchorage, Girdwood, Eagle River, Eklutna and communities in between. The opening marks the first time the waitlist for this area has opened in two years.

Housing Choice Vouchers help low-income households, seniors and persons with disabilities afford decent, safe and sanitary housing. Vouchers allow an eligible household to select a unit in the private market, and AHFC pays a portion of the household’s rent directly to the landlord. Because housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments.

The application period opens on Saturday, April 1, 2023, and closes on Sunday, April 30, 2023, 11:59 p.m., Alaska Time. Applicants can apply online through Alaska Housing’s application portal accessible with a personal computer, tablet or smartphone. For those without access to the Internet or needing assistance completing the application, a representative family member, friend, or helper may submit an application on their behalf. No paper applications will be accepted. One-on-one application assistance is available, along with Reasonable Accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Those needing assistance with the application process may contact AHFC at (907) 330-6100 or by email at housing@ahfc.us.

Waitlist Process:

  1. Apply online to be on the waitlist
  2. Only 1 application per household will be accepted
  3. After the application period closes, all applications will be randomly assigned a number and AHFC will advise all applicants of their status by email.

Families whose income is at or below 50 percent of the area median income are encouraged to apply. The maximum income level varies depending on household size. There is no minimum income requirement.

This application period is open specifically for those wishing to utilize a Housing Choice Voucher to rent in the Anchorage area. Families that are not currently living within the Municipality of Anchorage, but plan to move into the area, may apply.

Individuals participating in other AHFC rental assistance programs and who are seeking longer-term rental assistance may qualify for a Housing Choice Voucher. A separate application must be submitted online.

Housing Choice Voucher assistance is a subsidy paid by AHFC on behalf of low income households, to owners of rental units in the private rental market. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provides funding for this program to AHFC.

Housing Choice Vouchers are available in 12 Alaska communities and provide monthly rental payments to landlords while helping eligible Alaskans lease units in the private rental market. Before receiving a voucher, applicants are screened by Alaska Housing for program and income eligibility. Tenants who are approved for voucher assistance search for housing in the private rental market and go through the landlord's standard application and approval process, just like any other renter.
