Alaska Housing created the open-source Building Monitoring System known as BMON that measures real-time energy use to provide a summary of building operational performance. Energy use of Alaska Housing properties, including its headquarters, are managed by the system and data is provided publicly. With a click of a button, Alaska Housing can review energy-use trends and identify signs of potential problems in heat and electric supplies across its senior and public housing units.

Nonprofits, schools and other organizations around the state have benefitted from the system with both the Fairbanks North Star Borough and Mat-Su Borough school districts examples of how building monitors may be applied and data monitored from a single dashboard. BMON is saving energy costs and is a tool as students are introduced to the publicly accessible data to better understand energy spikes and a user ability to control it.
