A Rewarding Career
When Kyle applied for a position in Alaska Housing Finance Corporation’s Juneau office seven years ago, he had already worked in property management and was familiar with the industry, where every day is different. He wanted his next role to make a difference for his community.
“I wanted to do something I could feel good about,” Kyle said. “A job at Alaska Housing is difficult, but it’s a fun job and you’ll never be bored. The most rewarding thing is being able to hand over the keys to a beautiful apartment to a family in need.”
Now a property manager working in AHFC’s public housing department, Kyle says that the hurdles of his job are made worth it when he sees his clients succeed.
“In my experience, working in the public sector is far more rewarding than in the private sector. It’s more challenging, but the challenges are worth it when you are able to see a client go from being in their worst moment to buying their own house five or ten years down the road and you had a part in helping them get to that spot.”

Growing Professionally
Kyle’s work involves leading a team in running the day-to-day operation of five public housing properties, including lease enforcement, maintenance supervision and budget management. According to Kyle, when he started working at AHFC he never imagined he would have a team reporting to him.
“I never thought I would be anybody’s boss, but now I get to support and train a team and help run a program and a budget. The thing that surprised me the most about working for Alaska Housing has been how much I’ve grown and how much more capable I am than when I got here, more capable than I realized.”

Kyle said he has been helped in his own career by his boss, Lisa.
“Lisa has been very, very helpful and supportive. She’s someone that you want to work for. It’s nice having someone on your side who would run through a brick wall for you.”
This mentality extends beyond supervisors and now defines the atmosphere of the full Juneau team.
“We take our jobs seriously, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun,” Kyle said. “It’s a very supportive environment.”
