For decades, Alaska Housing Finance Corporation has helped Alaskans navigate the road to homeownership through free homebuyer education. A refreshed version of this class, HomeChoice™ – Steps to Homeownership, is newly launched and available fully online!

The homebuyer education course can help you feel confident as you get started on the road to homeownership, whether it's your first home purchase or you are returning to the market.

You’ll learn:

  • How to decide if homeownership is right for you
  • The terminology you’ll encounter throughout the buying process
  • How to shop for a lender
  • Money tips like how to budget for homeownership and improve your credit, and what kinds of expenses you can expect along the way
  • Information about different loan products
  • The benefits of building a home vs. buying an existing home
  • Much more! 

Take the class from home at your own pace and reference the HomeChoice™ workbook anytime during or after the class. Plus, the AHFC Mortgage team is here to support you if you have questions about the material.

There is no cost to take the course and by completing it you can earn up to $250 off the commitment fee on an AHFC loan.

Empowering homebuyers with information

Dawn, an Anchorage homeowner, says she took AHFC’s homebuyer education class more than 20 years ago and still recommends it to family and friends to this day.

“If someone hadn’t given me the information about homebuyer education when I was younger, I wouldn’t have been able to get a home on my own. It was a godsend. Now, I tell my son he has to take a homebuyer education class and I encourage people to seek out knowledge to learn about homeownership, because it really helped me.”

Dawn left the class with a folder full of reference documents and educational materials that she turned to repeatedly throughout her search for the perfect home, “I would routinely go through each chapter to make sure I was still on the right path,” she said.
