A Milestone for Her Family

As an artist, Crystal says she marks important details in her life through her beadwork – an artform she learned from her aunt. Having the opportunity to live at Alaska Housing Finance Corporation’s Birch Park property in Fairbanks has been one important milestone in her journey.
Crystal had a lot to balance during the pandemic as a single mother of three children, but her priorities were keeping her kids safe and searching for work. Finding a home in public housing and receiving rental assistance provided her with some needed breathing room while she worked toward her goals.
“When the apartment manager showed me apartment and explained how the rental assistance would work, I almost started crying, I couldn’t believe it. My kids are happy and have a place to run around. We pick berries by the river and have family nearby – it’s just a good spot, we like it here.”

With safe housing provided for her young family, Crystal took on the challenge of learning new computer skills through AHFC’s Jumpstart classes, which expanded her job opportunities.
She said she was looking forward to reentering the workforce full time, now that her kids are a little older and more independent.
In the meantime, Crystal said that she values getting to walk through the door and say, “I’m home.”
