Making a Career Out of Helping Others

230822 TANYA LEWIS KLB 1092

After working for the state of Alaska for a few years, Tanya was looking for a change in her career.

When an opportunity came along with Alaska Housing Finance Corporation she jumped at the chance. Seventeen years later, Tanya is a Property Manager I in the Public Housing department in Juneau, working with seniors, individuals with disabilities and family housing residents.

“I just love people,” she said. “And I like the fact that it’s different every day. That’s probably why I’ve been here for so long because nothing’s the same day in, day out.”

Different Populations, Different Needs

As a property manager, Tanya works at two different AHFC properties in Juneau. In the morning, she spends time with seniors and residents with disabilities at the Mountain View location and in the afternoon, she works with family housing residents at Riverbend. Each requires different levels of engagement with and assistance for residents.

Mountain View residents frequently have questions or need assistance that Tanya helps to coordinate.  Riverbend family housing units are often occupied by single parents, many of whom have benefited from the access to safe, quality, affordable housing and are working toward a better life for them and their families.

Being Part of Success Stories

It’s those moments that provide some of the most satisfying parts of her job. Through the years, Tanya has seen countless success stories. One that stood out was a family housing resident Tanya worked with to help her achieve a goal that may have seemed impossible – buying her own home.

The resident peppered Tanya with questions about what she needed to become a homeowner and Tanya provided information and resources, including Alaska Housing’s no-cost homebuyer education, which offers insights into the process of purchasing a home.

“She was working and I kept telling her, you could own for what you’re paying and then you can do what you want with your home. And she did it. She moved her family in and they’ve been there about five years. It was one of the good moments, really full circle.”

Part of the Community's Fabric

As a long-time resident of Juneau, Tanya has seen the importance Alaska Housing resources provide to the community. Tanya was a baby when her family moved to Juneau for her father’s job in the Coast Guard. Years later she is part of the fabric of the town.

“It’s small enough that I know a lot of people,” she said. “Sometimes people may ask you for something that you can’t help with, but another organization might be able to. So knowing the community, knowing the other agencies, knowing who can help if you guide them can be helpful.”
