HomeChoice™ Empowers Alaska Homebuyers

HomeChoice Class 6

Alaska Housing outreach specialists have brought value to prospective homebuyers for decades through HomeChoice™, a no-cost homebuyer education class

The six-hour class is open to all and is tailored to participants, whether they are buying their first home or their tenth. As educators, the outreach specialists draw from their years of experience to help prospective buyers ask the right questions and make informed decisions.

HomeChoice™ covers topics such as how to shop for a lender and real estate professional, how to get a home loan, navigating home inspections, money management and much more.

A Return to In-Person Learning

During the COVID-19 pandemic, HomeChoice™ was restructured as an online webinar series. Alaska Housing Outreach Specialists Cristy Nugent, Maude Morse and Savannah Melendez are excited to once again offer HomeChoice™ for in-person learning in Anchorage.

Participants who attend the classroom setting benefit from the chance to dialogue with instructors and other attendees face-to-face and may feel more comfortable asking questions.

They also benefit by hearing from local lenders and real estate licensees who attend in-person classes, contributing their insight to the discussion.

“While we have customized the virtual experience to be as interactive as possible, there is something special about meeting your instructors and other potential homebuyers face-to-face,” said Savannah Melendez.

Classroom Experience

In June, AHFC held two in-person classes at its Anchorage headquarters. Guest speakers representing local mortgage lenders and real estate organizations participated in the sessions, providing their perspectives on the market with attendees.

“A benefit of the in-person experience is that the guest speakers can tailor their information to your specific needs,” said Maude Morse. “Every market is different, and at an in-person class most attendees are considering buying in the same area.

Recent participants indicated that they felt more confident asking questions and making informed decisions following the class.

“We help participants see what is possible, and that can be empowering,” Morse summarized.

Take a Class

In-person HomeChoice™ classes will be regularly available starting in July and webinar sessions are still offered for those who cannot join an in-person class or who prefer to complete the course from the comfort of home.

Participants who complete the full six-hour class may benefit from a $250 certificate toward their commitment fee if they choose to get an Alaska Housing mortgage within two years of completing the class.
