While you are working through your fall home maintenance list, it is also an ideal time to check that your family is prepared for emergencies. September is National Preparedness Month, an annual reminder to take proactive steps to protect your family, home and community by preparing for the unexpected.

Action Items

  • Start a conversation with your family about safety and make sure that you are aware of disasters such as floods, tsunamis, fires or earthquakes that might impact the community.
  • Use resources like Ready.gov to help you prepare a home safety plan.
  • Talk to your support network – your friends, family, caregivers and neighbors – to include them in your emergency planning. Share tips, make sure you have each other’s phone number saved somewhere other than your phone, and encourage them to prepare their own preparedness plan.
