Back To The Future: 50 Years of Opening Doors for Alaskans

On May 26, 1971 Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) was created by the Alaska State Legislature and Governor William A. Egan. Alaska has seen boom years and bust years in the 50 years since, and AHFC has weathered them all.

Nine months ago, we had great plans to recognize our five decades of service to Alaskans with a year-long anniversary celebration, but COVID-19 had other plans. After Congress made emergency rent relief available, the state legislature and Governor Dunleavy directed over $242 million to AHFC to assist Alaskans impacted by the pandemic. We put the anniversary celebration on the back-burner, rolled up our sleeves, and got to work. And looking back, this is what we have always done.

From what started with 10 employees generating $10 million in mortgage activity in its first year, AHFC has grown to become an important factor in serving Alaskans and supporting the state's economy. We have built trust in the abilities of our staff to tackle big and complex tasks, including Alaska’s financial and housing crisis in the late ‘80s, the massive rollout of the Home Energy Rebate program in 2008, and the recent distribution of rent and utility relief. These accomplishments are a critical part of our history; so are the lesser-known — and just as important — achievements.

Do you know how many Alaskans have a roof over their heads every night thanks to public housing? Or, how many women have filled the position as Madame Chair for the AHFC board of directors? How about the number of homes that have been weatherized by Research and Rural Development?

We are now taking the time to honor the leadership, integrity, and respect AHFC has demonstrated for over 50 years. Through an interactive timeline you can take a trip back in time to see our important milestones weaved into the state's broader history. Get to know our staff outside of the office as you read about the diverse talents of our employees. Learn some little-known trivia about AHFC and share our joy as you read public housing family success stories.

Since the start, we have worked hard to build a reputation of not only competence and commitment, but also of compassion. We find solutions, whether it be in the mortgage business, public housing, energy efficiency, or support for the state’s most vulnerable. This success is due to the dedication of our employees, the tremendous support of our partners in the private and nonprofit sectors, and national, state, and local public offices.

Our history has taught us a lot and will serve us well into the future as we continue to provide Alaskans with access to safe, quality, affordable housing.
