What is a Housing Choice Voucher?

Housing Choice Voucher assistance allows an eligible household to select a unit in the private rental market to rent, and AHFC pays a portion of the household’s rent directly to the landlord. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides funding for this program to AHFC.

Am I eligible for Housing Choice Voucher assistance?

  • This application period is open specifically for those wishing to utilize a Housing Choice Voucher to rent in the Anchorage area, including Girdwood, Eagle River, Eklutna and communities in between. Families who are not currently living within the Municipality of Anchorage but plan to move into the area, may apply.
  • Before a Housing Choice Voucher can be issued, applicants will be screened for eligibility, including maximum income limits required by HUD. There is no minimum income requirement. Changes in income between submission of an application and reaching the top of the waiting list may affect eligibility.
