If you are looking for rental housing in the Anchorage area — including Girdwood, Eagle River, Eklutna and communities in between — you may be eligible for a Housing Choice Voucher.

What is a Housing Choice Voucher?

Housing Choice Vouchers help low-income households, older Alaskans, and individuals with disabilities afford safe housing.

  • You are able to find your own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments — including housing suitable for larger households.
  • You can look for housing that works best for your family, such as close to your children's school, near your job, or on a bus route.
  • You are responsible for paying a portion of the monthly rent directly to your landlord, and AHFC pays a subsidy portion directly to the landlord.
  • Voucher recipients with an adult who is able to work receive five years of subsidy. At the end of this period, families may choose to stay in the rental by signing a standard lease agreement with their landlord.
  • Some voucher recipients — such as older Alaskans or those with disabilities — may be eligible for longer-term assistance.

Am I eligible for voucher assistance?

  • Housing Choice Voucher eligibility is based on income.
  • Families whose income is at or below 50 percent of the area median income are encouraged to apply.
  • The maximum income varies depending on the size of your household. There is no minimum income requirement.
