Accepting Applications for Anchorage Rental Assistance

The deadline for Alaskans to apply for rental assistance in Anchorage is today!

The federally funded Housing Choice Voucher program supports landlords with a monthly rental payment paid by Alaska Housing as well as a portion from their tenants.

For low-income families with a work-able adult, rental support is limited to five years.

Deadline to apply is July 31 at 11:59 p.m. The waitlist is not expected to open again for 18-24 months.

Applications are available at 440 E. Benson Blvd., or online at

Families with vouchers often choose a home close to their workplace or near schools. In the first year with rental assistance, a participating family will pay 28.5 percent of their gross income toward rent. A family of four in Anchorage can gross $52,450 or less to be eligible for the housing subsidy based on the federal standard, 50 percent of Area Median Income (AMI). Participants’ share of rent will increase during a five-year period while the assistance Alaska Housing provides will decrease. Participating work-able families are required to complete a financial literacy class and will be offered other resources to help them succeed.

“Rental assistance boosts and brings stability to the private rental market and provides families with opportunities to pursue education, job training and financial independence,” says Bryan Butcher, CEO/executive director of Alaska Housing.

The Housing Choice Voucher program has demonstrated success for families in Alaska. In the last five years, participants have experienced a 17% increase in full-time employment and incomes have increased from $19,929 in Sept. 2014 to $30,564 as of March 31, 2019.
