Homeless Veterans and Their Families

The Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program is a referral-based, rental assistance program designed to meet the housing needs of homeless veterans and their families. This program is available in every Alaska Housing community that offers the Housing Choice Voucher program.

Veterans Crisis Line

The Veterans Crisis Line connects veterans in crisis and their families and friends with qualified, caring Department of Veterans Affairs responders through a confidential, toll-free hotline, online chat or text. If you are in a crisis or need immediate help:

Who is Eligible

Families whose income is at or below 80 percent of the area median income are encouraged to apply. Families may apply at any Alaska Housing voucher program location with an open waiting list.

VASH applicants must be referred to Alaska Housing by Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS). AVAHS provides supportive services to the family while they participate in the VASH Program.

How it Works

As vouchers become available, families are invited to a briefing session, provided detailed information about the program and issued a voucher.

To receive a voucher, the rental amount for the unit must be reasonable. The unit must pass a federal housing quality standards inspection. Landlords may use their own lease but Alaska Housing requires an initial lease term of one year.

Once a family with a voucher finds and leases an Alaska Housing-approved rental unit, families are responsible for paying their portion of the monthly rent directly to their landlord, while Alaska Housing pays the subsidy portion directly to the landlord.

How to Apply

Families or individuals must contact the Alaska VA Healthcare System for eligibility and referral. Families may contact the Alaska VA Healthcare System at 907-257-4700 or toll-free at 888-353-7574 for more information. Our application packages are available on our Applications page.
