Rental Housing for State Workers

In 2024, Alaska Housing Finance Corporation and local partners in Bethel, Kotzebue and Nome launched the Last Frontier Housing Initiative to build new rental housing opportunities for State workers. The first units have come online in Bethel, with units in Kotzebue expected to open in August and more in Nome to follow shortly after.

State workers should review the information below to apply for any units available. All information provided through the application process will be encrypted and securely transmitted to the property owner for final review once the order of applications has been determined. Please do not contact the local property owners directly. If there are questions regarding the process, please contact Amy Sanchez at Alaska Housing asanchez@ahfc.us.

Please note: State workers will be leasing these units directly from the local partners.

The facilities in Bethel and Kotzebue are now accepting applications from State workers. Information on the available units has been provided below for each of the communities.

Property Information: Bethel

Newly constructed two and three bedroom units are now available for State workers in Bethel. These
units will be managed by the City of Bethel and are available for occupancy now.

  • 2-bedroom, 835 sf units at $2,350/month rent
  • 3-bedroom, 835 sf units at $2,700/month rent

All units come with:

  • Full kitchen
  • Washer and dryer
  • Piped sewer service
  • Centrally located within walking distance to schools and services

Property Information: Kotzebue

Newly constructed one and two bedroom units for State workers are expected to come online in August. These units will be owned and managed by Kikiktagruk Inupiat Corporation. Units reserved for State workers will be collocated in a larger building that includes additional rental units for teachers, healthcare workers and public safety professionals.

  • 1-bedroom, 550 sf units at $2,350/month rent
  • 2-bedroom, 936 sf units at $2,650/month rent

All units come with:

  • Full kitchen
  • Washer and dryer
  • Piped sewer service
  • Centrally located within walking distance to schools and services

Additional Information: 

  • Available for move-in around September 1st
  • $1,000 deposit for each
  • Tenant pays electric, and phone/internet
  • No smoking
  • No pets

Property Information: Nome

Newly constructed 1-bedroom modular units are nearing completion in Nome for State workers. These units will be owned and managed by Bering Straits Regional Housing Authority.

  • 1-bedroom units will contain 550 square feet and will rent for $1,500 per month
  • Tenants will be responsible for electric, phone and internet
