Older Americans Month
Letter from Housing Relations Officer Jim McCall
Older Americans Month: Safe, quality housing for our seniors
May brings positive thoughts to most Alaskans. Not only are our days getting longer but temperatures are rising daily, and the fish are returning in droves. May is important in the senior community as it is recognized in Alaska, and across the nation, as Older Americans Month. This year’s theme is Connect, Create, Contribute.
What exactly do those things mean for seniors and their families?
- Connect with friends, family, and services that support participation.
- Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment.
- Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.
Through 2018, nearly 135,000 Alaskans were 60 years of age or older. Since 2005, Alaska has lead the nation in per-capita senior growth with an astonishing 63% growth rate. Put another way, Alaska should easily lead the nation this May as we all strive to Connect, Create and Contribute.
Alaska Housing is focused on ensuring Alaska's seniors have access to affordable and accessible homes and supportive services. We work with Alaska's Commission on Aging to offer research, information and solutions to provide the best housing options and support for aging Alaskans across the state.
Communities that encourage the contributions of older adults are stronger! By engaging and supporting all community members, we recognize that older adults play a key role in the vitality of our neighborhoods, networks and lives. Everyone benefits when everyone can participate.
Alaska Housing encourages you to Connect, Create, and Contribute by adding the hashtag #OAM19 to your own photos via social media to join us in celebrating Older American’s month 2019!
