Applications Accepted for Anchorage Rental Assistance in Privately-Owned Housing
Lottery will determine placement on affordable housing waitlist for low-income Alaskans
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, June 26, 2019 – The federally funded Housing Choice Voucher program is accepting applications in Anchorage through Alaska Housing Finance Corporation. Landlords who accept the vouchers receive monthly rental payment directly from Alaska Housing as well as their tenant. Low-income Alaskans may apply for housing assistance through July 31, 2019. For some seniors older than 62 or Alaskans with disabilities, long-term, stable housing assistance is ongoing. For families with a work-able adult, rental support is limited to five years.
Families with vouchers often choose a home close to their workplace or near schools. In the first year with rental assistance, a participating family will pay 28.5 percent of their gross income toward rent. A family of four in Anchorage can gross $52,450 or less to be eligible for housing subsidy based on the federal standard, 50 percent of Area Median Income (AMI). Participants’ share of rent will increase during a five-year period while the assistance Alaska Housing provides will decrease. Participating work-able families are required to complete a financial literacy class and will be offered other resources to help them succeed.
“Rental assistance boosts and brings stability to the private rental market and provides families with opportunities to pursue education, job training and financial independence,” says Bryan Butcher, CEO/executive director of Alaska Housing.
The Housing Choice Voucher program has demonstrated success for families in Alaska. In the last five years, participants have experienced a 17% increase in full-time employment and incomes have increased from $19,929 in Sept. 2014 to $30,564 at March 31, 2019.
Applications for Alaska Housing’s Anchorage Housing Choice Voucher program will be available July 1, 2019 at ahfc.us or at the Anchorage Family Investment Center at 440 East Benson Blvd. during normal business hours. More information, including housing availability in other Alaska Housing programs, is available at https://www.ahfc.us/publichousing/rental-programs/applications.
Applications for the Anchorage Housing Choice Voucher must be submitted/postmarked no later than 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2019. All applications will be randomized and a lottery will determine participant placement on the wait list for housing assistance. Applicants meeting income requirements are expected to be mailed a letter with their lottery number by September 2019.
Alaska Housing forecasts opening its Anchorage waitlist again in 18-24 months.
